    • Autoimmune diseases
    • Heart disease, obesity, and diabetes
    • Reduced life expectancy (up to 20 years with 6+ ACEs)
  5. Brain and Nervous System Changes
    Prolonged stress in childhood can:
    • Shrink the hippocampus (memory and emotion regulation)
    • Over-activate the amygdala (fear center)
    • Dysregulate the HPA axis, leading to chronic cortisol imbalances
