A counselor is a mental health professional who assists individuals dealing with various issues. In order to practice in different settings, professional counselors require at least a masters degree and state licensure . The most common counseling credentials are Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC). Counseling curriculums include completing courses in human development, ethics, multicultural and diversity issues, academic, and career development. Similarly to psychologists, the area of counseling has multiple specialities, such as career and school counseling as well as marriage and family therapy.
Professional counselors practice in schools, community centers, and in private practices. Although psychologists are often referred to as counselors, the primary difference between a counselor and a psychologist is the psychologist’s intensive training in conducting psychological and diagnostic assessments. In addition, clinical psychologists also receive more specialized training in working with severe mental illness. In most states, psychologists receive a doctoral level education and require extensive clinical training in order to receive state licensure. Psychology programs in clinical psychology are approved by the American Psychological Association (APA). However, other master-level programs are not overseen by APA.
In all, counselors and psychologists assist individuals cope with difficulties through various strategies. An individual may be most likely to be referred to a psychologist to complete thorough psychological and diagnostic testing. Once an accurate diagnosis is determined, the individual may seek services from a counselor or psychologist. The treating clinician would provide support and guidance to the individual while helping the individual gain increased insight into their difficulties and helping them resolve difficulties or struggles they are currently facing.
